Legality of cannabis by U.S. jurisdiction
In the United States, cannabis legality varies by state and territory. As of 2025, 41 states allow medical cannabis with a doctor's recommendation, and 24 states plus Washington D.C. permit recreational use. Federally, cannabis remains a Schedule I drug under the Controlled Substances Act, though the Department of Justice began rescheduling it to Schedule III in 2024, a process expedited by Executive Order 14370 in December 2025. This means that while state-legal cannabis operations are generally not prosecuted under the Rohrabacher–Farr amendment, interstate shipping or unlicensed possession could still face federal consequences. For you, this means buying from a licensed Maryland dispensary like Remedy is protected under state law.
